Hey there you lucky readers. By now most of you have had the chance to play the newest Nintendo Brawler known as Super Smash Bros. Brawl (And if you haven’t, there’s a copy at the nearest electronic section with your name on it). Well, I’ve been playing it for a while now, and I’ve come across a Nintendo Brawler I can call my own. This “Short and Sweet” is just a little something to get to know me by. Who knows, maybe I’ll come across you guys on the (somewhat laggy) WiFi connection.
First off and foremost, my main is not Sonic the Hedgehog. It’s painful for me to state this, as I’ve been wanting to main him since he was revealed on SmashBros.com. I went through the Subspace Emissary just so I could take control of the Blue Blur, and it was a sweet victory the moment he took the center stage. Wanting to test out my Smash prowess, I challenged my roommate, who was my Melee rival at the time.

Some dreams just aren’t meant to be.
It wasn’t pretty. His Wolf made quick work of me as I struggled to get him off the stage. Something was wrong, as this situation was the exact opposite in Melee. So… like anyone would, I (hesitantly) switched back to my Melee main, Falco Lombardi. It didn’t get much better, as I struggled to grasp Falco’s changes. As small as they were, a change was a change, and it wasn’t something I was comfortable with.

The beast of Brawl. My bitter rival!
Disheartened and discouraged, I stuck with my new yet inferior Falco. Any progress I thought I would make was tested and defeated against his superior Wolf (seriously though, I’m still at a loss of how Wolf took Falco’s air game… Star Wolf strikes again!).
Enough was enough. It was time to find my Brawl main.
I scoured the character select screen, searching for that one lucky character who had the privilege of being mained by yours truly. I finally came across a character who had everything I was looking for: powerful projectiles, useful smashes, and an air game that could knock your socks off. Ladies and gentlemen, I had finally found the Brawler that would take me places. Plus, he caught piggies when he won, and that was reason enough to do my best.
I had found him, I had found the one, the only… Toon Link!

The face that all players must now fear.
Toon Link played like a dream. He was quick, had excellent recovery, and his air game brought me back to the days of my Melee shenanigans. All was well in the world. Well… almost. There was one more test I had to surpass. One more hurdle to overcome. *Insert other metaphor here* My roommate and his Wolf must be defeated! The challenge was made, and I faced him with all of my wit and cunning (and bows, and boomerangs). In the end it was a close match… and I prevailed! I had defeated my all powerful rival, and peace was restored to the galaxy.
All was right in the dorm room that day, except for that English paper I still hadn’t written. From one adventure to the other I suppose.

For the N64 it was Pikachu all the way.
For Melee, I stuck with Peach and sometimes Luigi.
But for Brawl, I have a much harder time deciding on a main character to go with. If I HAD to choose, I might go for Meta Knight. On stages where it’s possible, it’s a lot of fun to glide completely under the level from one edge to the other (like the Animal Crossing stage).
But I prefer to mix it up. Sonic, Snake, Olimar and Wario are great new additions and I like how different they all play. Of course, this makes my win rate vary because I never truly “master” any character. I played both of the first two games in college so naturally mastering a character and winning were much more important back then =]

Good stuff Gewurztraminer!
Link was my main in the original, and as already stated Falco was my main in Melee.
Brawl definitely isn’t Melee 2.0. It’s a different beast altogether. And it took some time for me to realize this and adapt to the changes.
My secondary is Ganondorf, which I believe is second to last on the “tier list” for Brawl. But I enjoy his style of play and have a lot of fun using flame choke.
Right now I’m trying to get more comfortable with The Jiggs. I love watching my opponent struggle against the pink puffball that could.
